Eye Brows at Beth Ann

Recently, Beth Ann and one of her clients allowed me (Hi, my name is Hannah- I’m Beth Ann’s assistant) to sit in on a brow consultation to observe and reflect…. Here is what I learned.

Sally, let’s call her Sally (we give an alias to our “bare faced” clients), bravely asked BA to shape her eye brows. Sally is a very natural beauty, but as a working professional and busy mother, she doesn’t treat herself often. Sally told us, “I haven’t used different products in over four years, and the only stuff I ever wear is mascara, moisturizer and foundation.” So that’s how it began…

Beth Ann believes that eye brows are the frame for the face, and they are her focal point when she begins her creative process. From a technique standpoint, BA’s preferred method is tweezing, so investing in a good pair of tweezers is worth your money (we use and recommend Tweezerman).

Let me tell you about her work space...
Clean space to work in with time and patience to do this correctly
Good lighting- natural lighting is highly recommended
Clean tools and clean hands
A double-sided mirror (magnifying and regular)

Beth Ann explained that no face is perfectly symmetrical, and usually, the brows are two different shapes. Take the time to observe this in your own face. Cleanse your skin with luke warm water, and using a bristle brush, comb your brows- up and out- to find their natural shape. Are you sensitive? BA suggests applying Orajel or any baby teething gel to the brow area. BA began by taking her signature chopsticks as a straight line to find Sally’s best shape. The best brow has a slight arch. To find yours, hold the chopstick parallel to the outside edge of the colored part of your eye- the iris. Where the chopstick meets the hair should be the highest part of your brow. To find the end of your brow- extend the chopstick diagonally from your nostril, following the outside edge of your eye toward the brow. To find the beginning of your brow- place the chopstick vertically along the outside of the nose (please note, this is not an exact science but this will give you points of reference). The biggest mistake people make is over plucking, so take your time and gradually remove, taking a look and checking your work often. Don’t pull too many hairs at once and hold the skin taunt while you’re plucking. Tweeze the hairs from the skin in the same direction as they grow. When you have finished removing the hair, use a soothing gel/cream product to help any irritation that may have occurred. That should do the trick!

Sally came wearing gym clothes without a stitch of makeup. She left with a beautiful face saying, “I love my brows!” As I put her new products in a gift bag, I even noticed Sally staring in awe at her new self in the mirror over my shoulder. “Seriously Beth, I have never looked so good!”

Amy started out by making jewelry with beads and selling at farmers markets in Vail, Colorado. Beading opened the door to metalsmithing. She apprenticed a Colorado jeweler and took metalsmithing classes at night. Using a torch and hammer to manipulate the metal quickly became her passion.

Her current jewelry designs include mostly sterling silver and 14K gold-filled wire. You can still see the influence of beads in her line, with small accents of semi-precious stones to add a little color. She is also exploring the fun of copper and 14K rose gold-filled wire and quickly adding it to her line. Throwing Stars Jewelry includes a lot of hammering so it reflects light, while it also has an organic and hand-made feel.

She’s a working mom, so when it comes to wearing jewelry, she wants something that’s fun, lightweight and easy to wear, yet sophisticated and makes an artistic statement at the same time. From Broadway to Buckhead

Beth Ann is honored to stock the legendary Helen Eisemann Alexander's (aka Helen Eastman) new autobiography, From Broadway to Buckhead. Helen was born on Friday, the 13th in New York City and grew up in the "colorful and sometimes magical world of the swanky Pierre Hotel - once home to celebrities such as Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn." A Wardrobe Consultation with Beth Ann and Tiff...

Hi! My name is Tiffany, and I manage the Boutique and Makeup Studio. I recently turned THIRTY (oy!) and decided to have Beth Ann come and help me harness my personal style and eliminate the 'little girl' looks that are still lurking in my closet. My goal is to never again have one of those terrible days where you throw something on and don't feel like yourself for the rest of the day.

First, I made a collage of tear sheets showing looks that I wanted to incorporate into my wardrobe.

BA worked her magic and transformed it into somewhat of a story board. She even incorporated this little index card I recently came across showing my 'colors' from Junior High Home Ec class. She said my style includes romantic and retro elements with a funky edge.

First things first: We went through my closet and eliminated outdated/worn out pieces or things that just plain weren't ME. You know, those things you buy just because they're on sale, or things that you once loved (the ugly wedge shoes that you keep around because they remind you of your study abroad in Italy). It's so much easier to see clearly when there's an expert on the premises! Here's the mountain of things going to charity.

Daisy thought this jacket was a keeper, but BA and I disagreed...

Now that there was more breathing room for my favorite pieces, BA went to work putting outfits together in a way that emphasized my personal style and brought in elements I loved from my collage. It was FANTASTIC having her eye put interesting combinations together from my wardrobe - things I would have never come up with on my own!

She explained that in her modeling days, she learned that there are particular points on a person's body where clothing should hit to flatter their individual body shape (in my case, make this short, pear-shaped girl appear longer and leaner!) AND what to look for when I go shopping in the future. She also showed me how to adjust pieces I currently own to be more flattering. In most cases, her recommendations involved having a piece taken in or the hem adjusted.

I'm going to take this skirt in a bit and shorten and BUBBLE the hem so that it doesn't swallow my small frame...

In this photo, note that the black pants have one shorter leg and one longer. She suggested I let down the hem to elongate my legs. See the difference?

I am Beth Ann Taratoot, former fashion model and owner of Beth Ann Boutique & Makeup Studio, located in the heart of Buckhead's West Village. I came of age during the Women's Liberation Movement and have built a following through the bell-bottoms of the '70s, shoulder pads of the '80s, neutrals of the '90s and into the eclectic beginnings of the 2000s.

Preventing Summer Makeup Meltdown

First things first, stay hydrated! Drink lots of water to replenish the fluids depleted by the heat. Use a light, oil-free moisturizer, such as our Calendula Creme, to keep skin supple.

Start with Shine Control, which contains micro-sponges to prevent midday shine by absorbing excess oil.

Primers are key! Apply a face primer, such as our Retexturizing Face Primer with SPF 20, to fill in lines and pores while creating a smooth base to which makeup can adhere. To help shadow stay put, first apply Botanical Shadow Primer to your lid, then follow with a powder shadow.

Choose a sheer foundation. Our Minimal Makeup feels light, blends seamlessly into skin, contains sun protection, and offers great coverage! Apply with a Foundation Brush to deposit the right amount of pigment to create a flawless look.
